mPPE compounds

Halogen-free flame-retardant mPPE: low density, dimensionally stable, hydrolysis resistant.

Example grade / typical values — to be corrected by GREENPOLYMER

Selection criteria

  • Dimensional stability
  • Hydrolysis resistance
  • Flame retardancy

mPPE (modified polyphenylene ether, commonly called PPO) is based on polyphenylene ether (PPE) blended with polystyrene and other components. It has low density, low water absorption, good dimensional stability, hydrolysis resistance and good electrical insulation. Halogen-free flame-retardant mPPE is commonly used for electrical parts of energy storage and PV equipment, battery module brackets, junction boxes and internal structures of telecom equipment.

Strengths and weak points of mPPE

StrengthsWeak points
Low density, lighter partsPoor resistance to some solvents (such as certain hydrocarbons and esters); stress cracking possible
Low water absorption, dimensionally stableModerate flow; long thin parts need evaluation
Hydrolysis resistant, suits damp heatModerate weathering; outdoor use needs extra evaluation
Halogen-free flame retardancy is relatively easy to achieveSurface gloss and color range not as good as ABS
Stable dielectric properties—

Design points

  • Avoid contact with incompatible chemicals

If the part will touch lubricants, cleaners or adhesives, run chemical stress cracking tests first.

  • Control internal stress

A higher mold temperature helps reduce internal stress.

  • Leave strain margin on screw bosses and snap fits

  • Keep walls no thinner than the test thickness of the material's flammability rating

FAQ

Are mPPE and PPO the same material?

They refer to the same class of material. This page writes mPPE (commonly called PPO): the base resin is polyphenylene ether (PPE), and the modified material is called mPPE.

Can mPPE be used in battery packs?

mPPE is often used for battery module brackets and electrical parts. It depends on temperature, flammability, insulation and chemical resistance requirements; please send us your specification.
